The Tucson Jazz Institute (TJI) Ellington "Big Band" directed by Brice Winston, is comprised of high school musicians from the greater Tucson area including Nogales. The TJI big band, is the #1 High School Big Band placing in the top three eight years in row at the prestigious national Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Competition presided over by "Wynton Marsalis." They continue to win many prestigious awards each and every year. TJI has over 100 students and gives many children an outlet they would not have otherwise. Over 90% get college scholarships (including Julliard and others). Evenings performance will open with the Basie Band and guest Sarah Tolar (singer/songwriter,) then continue with The Ellington Band and Sarah before a short break. The second set will feature an eight piece Middle School Band (Future Ellington Band Members) who will do songs with Sarah. Finishing out the set will be The Ellington Band and Sarah. We're in good company with Sarah Tolar who is an accomplished singer, songwriter, performer, and music educator, performing throughout the U.S., Europe, China, and Canada, and appeared on several televisions shows, including "The Today Show" and "The Late Show" with David Letterman. Sarah is currently a resident of Tucson and has recently recorded a new album of jazz standards.
